Grammar school

An aerial view of Dunstable Grammar School , apparently taken while a swimming gala was taking place in the school pool, seen just behind the main building. On the pool's left is the collection of classrooms in what became known for many years as the “new” building, and the school's gymnasium is towards the right. In the corner of the school grounds are the protective walls screening the rifle range used by the school's army cadets. The distinctive building at the top left of the photo is part of the Waterlow printing works, now demolished. Also demolished is the cottage near the pavement in High Street which once housed the school's (unofficial) tuckshop. This has now made way for a more imposing entrance for the pupils of Ashton Middle School, which has inherited the old grammar school building.
