High Street North (Lawn left)

High Street North, Dunstable, looking towards the town centre crossroads, with the “Manor House” on the right. The photo must have been taken between 1869 and 1879 - the clock tower on the town hall (seen in the background) was added in 1869, but the building burned down in 1879.

The trees on the left front the wooded garden of The Lawn, a Gothic-style building which was demolished to make way for the block of shops which now include Argos. The building on the extreme left was a “gate house” for The Lawn and adjoined Grove House, now the offices for Dunstable Town Council. A photo of the gatehouse at the time of its demolition is on this website headed “Lawn”.
